CLAREMORE, Okla (WTHR) —Claremore High School in Oklahoma honored a veteran who fought in WWII.
Corporal Lewie Shaw, 95, became an orphan when he was only 12 years old. He dropped out of high school at 17 and worked as a school bus driver and janitor, KJRH reported.
In 1943, he enlisted in the Marines. He was injured during the war.
After he worked for a lumber company for 30 years, all without a high school diploma … until now.
On Thursday, Nov. 7 he had his graduation ceremony.
Shaw said he was able to get through life without his diploma, but encourages students today to work hard.
“My advice to them is to keep clawing, continue digging,” he said. “Get that education.”
