A picture of a child playing in the leaves close to a road has gone viral.
A UPS driver saw the child while delivering packages on his route.
The driver says he’s just trying to raise awareness about a safety issue.
UPS driver Jordan Weaver was delivering packages in a neighborhood when he saw a young boy hiding in the leaves.
A leaf pile is fun for children, but can be dangerous when it’s close to the road.
“I couldn’t believe it at first, my heart completely stopped,” said Weaver.
The photo circulating online shows a boy having fun in a leaf pile. But with how close he is to the road, a driver might not see the child playing in the leaves.
“Luckily I parked across the street from the stop, so I didn’t see the child until after I made the delivery. So I immediately grabbed my phone, and went and asked the mother if I could take a picture you know,” said Weaver.
UPS drivers see potentially dangerous situations like this one all the time.
“Countless times a day. Distracted driving is the main one. You see so many people on their phones not paying attention to the roads around them. Especially in neighborhoods like this,” said Weaver.
Playing close to the road because of leaf piles or snow piles.
Drivers like Weaver want everyone to be alert no matter what season it is. For parents seeing the photo, it’s a good reminder to keep their children close by.
“Oh no, you know! He could have died. And I was like oh my goodness I have to be even more careful in paying attention to our kids,” said Dayana Botello, who saw the photo on Facebook.
Weaver hopes the photo makes everyone pay more attention when they get behind the wheel.
“You really just have to keep your eyes open. No matter what street you’re on, no matter where you’re at, you really just have to keep your eyes open. You just really have to pay attention to everything around you constantly,” said Weaver.
By the time the mother approved the picture, the child had moved. But she still allowed Weaver to take a photo.
It serves as a good reminder for everyone to both be careful while driving and to talk to your children about safe areas to jump in leaves and play in the snow.
