The George Redding Bridge was closed around 10 p.m. due to “ongoing issues” with the car meet, police said. Mayor Pete Byron called Gov. Phil Murphy for additional support. Police from Ocean City, Atlantic City, Upper, Middle, and Lower Cape May responded, officials said.
This year’s event had been moved to Wildwood from Ocean City, MD, and had been branded as a “laid back” and “chill” event.
Wildwood H20i Crash Video
Hundreds of cars and thousands of people invaded Wildwood this weekend for what police are describing as an “unsanctioned” pop-up H2oi car rally that delved into a chaotic scene Saturday night when at least two people were killed.
Video from earlier in the day Saturday shows a calmer scene with cars cruising down main roads of Wildwood like Rio Grande and Atlantic avenues, with vehicles doing burnouts as crowds gathered on the sidewalk to watch.
But by night, chaos erupted as huge groups of people swarmed the streets, drivers pulled donuts in the middle of intersections and in at least two incidents, caused crashes that killed two people.

multiple cars are seen doing donuts, spinning around the middle of the intersection as a large crowd gathers on the corners to watch, shout and record on their phones.
The crowd gradually spills out onto the street as even SUVs do spin-outs.
Toward the end of the 17-minute video, the crowd appears to have taken over the street as cars speed past, driving over the center lane into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing the people in the street, before police arrive and drive through the crowd.
