On January 31, 2022, a female student reported to the West Plains Police Department that she had been sexually assaulted by an employee of the West Plains R-7 School District at a campus facility on January 27, 2022.
The investigation was concluded, and charges were forwarded to the Howell County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office resulting in an arrest warrant being issued for the subject.
On February 22, 2022, Christopher R. Taylor, age forty-one, was arrested by the Howell County Sheriff’s Department on charges of Sexual Contact with a Student, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Child Molestation with a bond set at $50,000.
The West Plains R-7 School District was fully cooperative with the investigation and took immediate action on the employee. Christopher Taylor is no longer affiliated or employed by the R-7 School District.

Taylor was charged with three counts of a lewd act on a minor and three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor. In court Tuesday, Taylor pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
“I want to apologize deeply to my community and my family. I truly am sorry for the devastation I’ve caused my family and I deserve the punishment that I have,” said Taylor in court. “I am remorseful for the relationship because it was unhealthy.
The age difference was unhealthy. My emotions, our emotions got to us and got out of control. But I am remorseful and I hate how this happened.”
Victim’s advocate Sally Wofford read a statement from the victim on her behalf. It read in part, ” “I was 14 going on 15 when Mr. Taylor was telling me what to do, things I knew were not right. Mr.
Taylor was the adult at the time, he knew it was wrong as I do now. It was his mistake and not mine. I am just now getting my life back. And I am so happy to see justice placed upon Mr. Taylor.”
The charges came after a father said he became suspicious of his 15-year-old daughter’s relationship with a teacher.
The arrest warrants indicate that Taylor kissed and touched the girl and had sexual intercourse with her in a wooded area near the Calhoun Falls Charter School on March 20.
Curtis Pauling, a prosecutor with the South Carolina Attorney General’s office said ” Judge this is a disturbing case because the defendant actually knew the victim’s mother prior to.
They actually had a relationship in high school and the defendant grew up with the victims father. It appears that Mr. Taylor targeted this victim, groomed her to get what he wanted.”
The 40-year-old was sentenced to seven years in prison and must register as a sex offender when he is released.
