Music clearly runs in the Petersen blood. We saw evidence of this when a video of Ashur, son of legend Taliep Petersen, singing an Aladdin hit song with his mother went viral this week
Many of us have heard countless covers of A Whole New World, the soundtrack to one of Disney’s most popular animated features, Aladdin.
If you ask any theatre or musical professional, they will tell you that it’s not the easiest song to sing alone, let alone as a duet.
While it doesn’t have too many high notes to belt, it requires singers with a rich texture to their voices who not only deliver their verses in the perfect pitch, but who can also harmonise without dropping a note during that oh-so-magical chorus (can you hear it as you read this?).
As it turns out, this challenging song was child’s play for the accomplished Petersen family, as Ashur and his mother, Madeegha Anders proved in their cover.
Ashur, who regularly covers hit songs, shared the latest duet with his mom and their performance was so emphatic that the video has already amassed an incredible five million views on Facebook at the time of writing!
Watch it below:
Ashur is the son of late music and theatre legend, Taliep, and he has done his family extremely proud in the last few months.
Fans of The Voice South Africa will recognise him from this year’s competition
Although he wasn’t able to go all the way, he certainly made his family proud.
The exposure on the show has helped him promote his own videos and although his following has grown, the younger of the Petersen singers admitted that he didn’t think the duet with his mother would go viral.
Speaking to Independent Online he said, “I didn’t know the video would get so much attention because I solely did it for my mother, but I’m glad it could spread cheer. I’m happy that my music could touch hearts. I never got to do this with my father.”
Do you think that Ashur is on his way to becoming South Africa’s next big online sensation?
