FOX 10 News is alerting you to the law concerning abandoned animals following pictures that started going viral in Mobile Friday.
The pictures are of a dog a woman says she saw put out of a car in west Mobile Friday morning.
The dog is now at the Mobile SPCA shelter.
Lindsay Beasley said she saw the dog being put out of a vehicle on Johnson Road about 7:00 Friday morning and took pictures.
Beasley said she tried to get the dog to come with her, but it ran away.
She said she noticed a car pulled to the side of the road and slowed down to see what was going on.
Beasley said, “That’s when the man got out with the dog and set the dog down behind his car, and then got back in and the little dog followed him around to the door, and he took off. “
Janine Woods with the Mobile SPCA says a woman found the dog later and brought it to the shelter.
She said, “This is shameful this dog is in this kind of condition.”
Woods said there is a state law against abandoning animals.
She said, “You can go to jail for up to a year and the fine is up to $2000 dollars per animal. So, let’s say you leave a box of puppies on the side of the road with seven puppies in it. That’s a pretty steep fine.”
And in the City of Mobile, abandoning animals is a violation of the city code with a fine of more than $200.
There are other choices.
Woods said, “If somebody had brought this dog into our office this morning, we would have taken this dog with no questions asked.”
Beasley said, “If you can’t love it. take it somewhere where it can be loved.”
The SPCA said it believes the dog will be fine and he will be available for adoption.
