BLENDON TOWNSHIP, OH (WCMH) – A Facebook post by a Blendon Township police Sergeant is getting a lot of attention.

After a storm knocked out power Saturday evening, Sgt. Erick Moynihan posted a video showing motorists plowing through an intersection that did not have a working traffic signal.

Blendon Township police chief John Belford says the high winds damaged several businesses and knocked out power in the area around Sunbury Rd and Executive Parkway.

In the video, Moynihan explains the situation and then turns the camera on motorists as they don’t appear to slow down, seemingly oblivious to the risk.

Belford says it’s one of the basic rules of driving and yet it is one that is most commonly ignored. “It seems to be one of the first things drivers learn and one of the first things they forget,” Belford said. “They need to come to a complete stop at a malfunctioning traffic signal and treat it like a four-way stop sign.”

Belford says there were no accidents at the intersection Saturday night. He said wherever drivers are going, whatever hurry they’re in, it’s not worth ignoring the obvious risk of a malfunctioning traffic signal. “Drivers tend to forget about what the other guys are doing,” Belford said. “If you’re driving straight through a malfunctioning traffic signal, somebody else might be doing the same thing.”
