A family originally from the Rochester region has become an Internet sensation.
You’ve likely seen the now-viral video this week. Five-year-old Teddy Plucknette cut his siblings’ hair, and shaved his own head, with a buzz cutter while their mother was in the shower.
Stephanie Plucknette, 33, last week shared a video of the aftermath on her Instagram account, in tears, but reminding her children that “it’s just hair” and will grow back.
“My first reaction was ‘No, no, no’ and I started crying,” she said adding that she immediately called her husband, who quickly calmed her down. “He first asked who died. … He assured me it was just hair and it would grow. He’s always the calming force and voice of reason.”
Stephanie and her husband, Ben, met in middle school and were both raised in Rochester — Ben graduated from Spencerport High School and Stephanie graduated from Nazareth Academy and the University of Rochester. They currently live in San Antonio, Texas, where Stephanie works as a nurse and Ben is in the U.S. Air Force.
The couple married in Rochester in 2012 and have three children — Teddy, Eloise, 3, and Fred, 2.
And on Tuesday night, the family appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Stephanie Plucknette told Kimmel that she was preparing for work for the night and “forgot that I had left the clippers outside because I shaved the dog earlier.”
“I did about 100 other things in the day and then took a brief shower,” she said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “I was gone literally eight minutes. I came out and Teddy was holding the shaver and was like ‘Mom, look what I did.'”
Teddy had cut off the hair on the back of his sister Eloise’s head, leaving her blond bangs and the curls framing her face intact. Little brother Fred’s hair was also clipped before Teddy shaved off much of his own hair.
“Do you like your haircut?” Stephanie Plucknette asked her daughter on the video.
“No,” Eloise replied.
Stephanie Plucknette said she shot the video, shared the footage on Instagram and sent it to her family. Her younger brother Ian Hagadorn, 21, of Scottsville, posted the video on Twitter “and that’s when it really went viral,” she said.
“It was too funny not to put out there,” Hagadorn said. “I personally wouldn’t think to get out my phone and record, but she did and it just took off. It’s crazy.”
He said watching his family on television was a bit surreal. He shared the video on social media on Saturday, and that video has been viewed more than 8 million times. Other versions of the video on Facebook has been viewed more than 50 million times, he said.
Hagadorn described his nephew Teddy as “just a normal kid. I never would have expected him to do something like this.”

On his Tuesday show, Kimmel interviewed the Plucknette family. The boys now have buzz cuts like their father.
Eloise, however, has not received a new hairdo, her mother said.
“We haven’t cut or trimmed it because it’s long on the front and sides and she can still wear barrettes,” Stephanie Plucknette said. “She loves barrettes. But the back … it’s gone. She’ll run her hands over it and we talk about how great the buzz cut feels.”
Teddy said he had fun cutting all of the hair, but won’t do it again “because my mom told me not to.”
Kimmel also surprised the family with a trip to Disneyland. The family returns to Rochester about once a year.
