A video showing a man ranting about two women speaking Spanish near him has stunned a large portion of social media users.
It started when two women started to speak Spanish and other people decided to order in the same language but the man in the video was not pleased.
His racially charged rant was recorded by another person as the man addressed the bilingual workers.
“I pay for their welfare. I pay for their ability to be here,” said the man. “So, the least they can do, the least they can do is speak English.”
The customer who captured the video said she felt compelled to help the women who were talking to each other in Spanish.
“Once I put my camera down and I said to him ‘Well, you know, you want to call ICE, feel free. I’m going to call the police because now. I feel threatened.’ And that moment, he threw his sandwich. He threw his soda.”
It’s a moment that has spread so quickly across the internet that even New York City’s mayor chimed in about the video.
“New York City’s diversity is our strength,” wrote Mayor Bill De Blasio on Twitter. “It’s what makes this city great. The 8.6 million people who call this city home speak more than 200 languages – they’re all New Yorkers and they’re all welcome here.”
