CMA Awards 2018: Keith Urban wins entertainer of the year
Put your banjos in the back and head down the “Old Town Road” with a cover of the viral hit from country star Keith Urban.
Urban posted his stripped-down take on the controversial Lil Nas X chart-topper to social media Saturday, singing the first verse and chorus from behind a banjo. Urban captioned the track with a “rock on” emoji, and Lil Nas X responded by calling the post “amazing.”
A viral hit that’s stirring a debate on what defines country music, “Old Town Road” reached No. 1 last week on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart — days after being pulled from the trade publication’s Hot Country Songs chart for not embracing “enough elements of today’s country music.”
Blending country lyricism with trap beats, “Old Town Road” debuted last week at No. 53 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart; a remixed version of the track featuring Billy Ray Cyrus dropped earlier this month.
