Jessica Mendoza isn’t counting the Nationals out just yet

The Nationals claimed a two-game sweep of the Braves with a 14-4 win in Atlanta Wednesday night. Here’s the latest Nats and Braves news.

Players Notes:

Anibal Sanchez returned from the 10-day injured list to make an astounding start against the Braves on Wednesday night. He retired the first 16 batters of the ball game in his return and went six strong innings, striking out seven Braves. The perfect game bid was broken up by Ozzie Albies in the sixth, but Sanchez claimed his first win of the 2019 campaign after entering the night 0-6.

The streak is extended again by Juan Soto. His career-best hitting streak is up to 13 games after an RBI single in the second inning against the Braves. Soto also smacked a home run in the Nats’ blowout win.

Plenty of other Nats had productive nights at the plate, too. Howie Kendrick went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs, Matt Adams knocked in three and hit a homer, and Anthony Rendon scored two runs and drove in two more.

Young righty James Bourque was optioned to Triple-A Fresno with Sanchez pulled up from the IL. Only having one appearance while with Washington, the 25-year-old allowed four earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.

Looking for any potential bullpen help they can get, the Nationals signed LHP Jonny Venters, who was formerly in the Braves organization. The 34-year-old was sent to Double-A Harrisburg.

Jeremy Hellickson has been shut down from throwing due to shoulder soreness. Hellickson is currently on the 10-day IL with a right shoulder strain.

Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was chased out of the game after recording just three outs when the Nationals put up eight runs on him. His ERA jumps to 5.56 after the horrid start.

Austin Riley drove in all four of Atlanta’s runs with a seventh inning grand slam off Nats reliever Kyle McGowin
