An ingenious idea.
Facebook user Jerwyn Buenaventura shared a now-viral post on Wednesday that shows his friend Angelie Janelle Orleans wearing a poncho made out of an SM plastic bag while on vacation in Hong Kong.
In the caption, Buenaventura wrote something fashion publications frequently ask celebrities: “Who are you wearing today?”
He tagged Orleans as saying: “Henry Sy.”
Sy is the Philippines’ richest man who owns the SM mall empire. The company has malls all over the country and even in China.
Orleans struck a pose in her SM Hypermarket plastic bag, red track pants, and edgy sunnies. Her look was so on point that the post has received over 8,700 likes and 8,500 shares.
In a Facebook message, Buenaventura told Coconuts Manila that they were queing for The Rapids ride in Ocean Park Hong Kong when Orleans thought of the plan. According to him, Orleans didn’t want to purchase the 40HKD (US$5.10/PHP270.85) poncho for the water ride.
“So she used the SM [plastic] bag [that] she had to protect her OOTD from getting wet,” Buenaventura shared.
Orleans was supposed to use it for her shoes.
“Fortunately, she was thin enough to wear the bag,” he added. He said they also cut the bottom part of the bag to make it fit like a tee.
And it actually did its job, keeping Orleans’ top safe and dry, Buenaventura mentioned.
Netizens were amused and tagged friends to urge them to try it.
Facebook user Neveen Tan told a friend: “I think you can pull this off.”
Aryssa Martin wrote in Filipino: “Our fashion sense has nothing on this.”
Sherdale John Valdez said Orleans had swag.
Jean Olano said it was the local Balenciaga.
Keep this trick in mind if you ever need a DIY poncho.
