England’s fairytale run to the World Cup semi-finals came to an end on Wednesday night after losing 2-1 to Croatia after extra-time.

The Three Lions had very little expectations going into the tournament.

Many fans would never have envisaged England would progress to the last four of the competition.

But strong showings against Tunisia and Panama in the group stages propelled Gareth Southgate’s men into the last 16.

The draw suddenly opened up for England, and they found themselves in the semi-finals after seeing off Colombia and Sweden.

But England could not go one better as they fell to the Croatians, with Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic getting on the scoresheet to send their team into the final.

Although it was a wonderful tournament for England, their players will still be extremely disappointed after missing out on a berth in the final.

Every single one of England’s players gave it their all on their run to the final four, making Englishman and women proud of their achievements.

And Daniel Sturridge posted a perfect tweet shortly after the final whistle urging fans to continue to praise the team, despite their defeat.

“If anyone has anything negative to say about this @England team or individuals keep your tweets to yourself,” he wrote.

“Nobody would have thoughts they’d be where they are or achieved what they have and they’ve made everyone proud so get behind them and show love not hate #threelions ❤️

Very well said, Daniel.

His tweet had attracted 50,000 ‘likes’ within just an hour of being posted, meaning there’s clearly a lot of England fans that share the same emotions.

This England team has not just done themselves proud, they have done a whole nation proud.

They went into the tournament with very little expectations, yet so nearly made it all the way to the final.

Southgate’s team gave it their best against Croatia but it simply wasn’t enough.

But despite coming up just short, they deserve to be welcomed as heroes by England fans upon their return from Russia.
