Christian Pulisic’s tweet from five years ago has been bombarded with savage messages following his disastrous Chelsea debut.
The 20-year-old attacker secured a £58 million transfer to Chelsea in January, but he officially joined the club in the summer with the player making his competitive debut during Sunday’s devastating Premier League defeat to Manchester United.
He entered the fray as a second-half substitute with United scoring just seven minutes after he came on.
The Reds went on to beat Chelsea 4-0 and Pulisic’s old tweet resurfaced online following his side’s resounding opening weekend loss.
“When you know you made a mistake..,” his tweet reads from 2014.
Fans wasted no time in responding to his old tweet.
Speaking after the game, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard explained his reasoning behind leaving Pulisic on the bench.
“Christian Pulisic is 20 years old and he’s come across from Dortmund. He will be a fantastic player for the club. He has got great ability. You saw little moments with his acceleration on the ball,” he said.
“But I have also got other options in midfield and in those areas, and I don’t want to stick Christian straight into the fire without trying to help him along the way. It was one of those games where I felt it was better to start with Ross [Barkley] and Mason [Mount], who have been very strong in pre-season, and bring Christian on.
“If the game had carried on at 1-0, or we were back in the game as we should have been, he would have been a great injection. In the end it was difficult for him because the game went quickly away from us.”
Will Pulisic be a hit at Chelsea? Let us know.
