Chipotle has fired the manager of one of its St. Paul locations after footage showing an alleged racial stereotyping incident went viral on social media.
Masud Ali, 21, uploaded video on Thursday showing he and his friends trying to get served at the 867 Grand Avenue Chipotle after going to the gym.
The start of the video, which has been viewed more than half a million times since Ali uploaded it to Twitter, shows the manager telling the group: “You gotta pay cos you never have money when you come in here.”
“Y’all are basically stereotyping us,” one of Ali’s friends tells the staff, “for what reason?”
Ali uploaded several more videos showing their interaction, and it appears that the manager had the men confused with some other men who had been at the restaurant on an earlier night and couldn’t pay for their meal.
“So Chipotle gonna sit here and tell me I can’t eat because they think I look like someone that stole from them before??” Ali tweeted.
The manager apologizes to other customers as the disruption continued, with the men then showing cash to her to prove they had the means to pay. They still didn’t get served.
Chipotle responded to Ali’s tweet by confirming that the manager in question had been “terminated.”
