The Chinese Embassy in Kenya on Thursday distanced itself from comments aired by one of its nationals who was recorded describing Kenyans as monkeys.

The Embassy clarified that the comments made by the man did not represent the views of the Chinese people.

Spokesperson Zhang Gang further called for the Chinese nationals living and working in Kenya to abide by the laws of the country.

“The Chinese Embassy always requires the Chinese companies and individuals to abide by the local law, stay and work legally in Kenya, making positive contribution to the friendship and cooperation between China and Kenya,” stated the embassy spokesperson.

The Chinese national by the name Liu Jiaqi was arrested, his work permit revoked and deported on Thursday morning over claims of racism.

According to the Embassy, Jiaqi’s employer took drastic measures against him in June over the racist comments.

Liu Jiaqi, in the video, referred to Kenyans as “poor monkeys” and stated that he was in the country only because of money.

In the clip, he is told off by one of his colleagues who maintains that he should not be allowed to work in the country anymore.

This comes after the video went viral on social media and drew reactions from netizens who called for his arrest and prosecution.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was among those who reacted to the video reiterating that the man should be deported.

The comments by Jiaqi were seen as a mockery of President Uhuru’s visit to China to enhance trading between the two nations.
