Berwick sophomore Katie Starr had a week that was nationally recognized.
She went 7 for 7 at the plate in two victories and made a spectacular catch against the outfield fence against Crestwood that was featured on ESPN’s flagship show, “SportsCenter.”
She was selected as The Citizens’ Voice Athlete of the Week.
After you’ve had a couple days to think about it, did the fact you made such a great catch and it went viral start to sink in? It kind of did; it still feels unreal. As the days went on, it kind of started sinking in a little bit more.
Did your teammates give you a hard time afterward in practice? A little bit. There were a bunch of fence jokes. Like, “Fly ball — got to watch out for the fence!”
You had a great stretch at the plate, too. Do you pride yourself on having such a well-rounded game? I’m glad that I can go 7 for 7 like that, but I don’t really pride myself on it because it’s not just me that can do it. My whole team can do it.
Is there any part of your game you’re focused on improving as a junior and senior? I’m definitely going to try to work on hitting more. Last week was cool because that’s probably not going to happen again soon. I could use a lot of work. But I feel like I’ve improved all-around from freshman year.
Any team goals for the rest of the season? We definitely want to make it as far as we can. We’ve got to keep picking ourselves up and keep going, get into the playoffs.
You also play soccer and basketball. Is it difficult to be consistent across three different sports? It’s not really hard because they’re all in different seasons. My family grew up playing softball and my dad baseball, so it kind of runs in the family. I’ve been playing soccer for five years. Basketball, I don’t know where that came from.
