When it comes to the release of a new Taylor Swift video, Swifties have learned to expect the unexpected. From hidden messages to sneaky references, the singer often packs her visuals with plenty of cameos and clues for fans to take in. And a surprising star has emerged following the release of her newest video for single “Delicate.”
The video, which features Taylor walking barefoot in the subway and dancing in the rain, included a scene in which Taylor is invisible from the eyes of a woman applying lipstick. While the super-powered Swift moment is impressive, it’s the appearance of the woman applying her makeup that has Twitter talking.
In a post on her Twitter, Megumi Cheng revealed that person applying the lipstick was her mom Junko Cheng. In a now viral tweet, she wrote: “this is my mom. she’s 57 and felt like pursuing acting recently…here she is. So beautiful.” Her mom then responded to the love, writing: “I actually made my teenage daughter proud. #winning.”
Despite how seamless the music video moment looks, Junko revealed in an interview with Billboard that she needed a little help behind the scenes. She said: “I’m only 5-foot-3 and Taylor is way taller [5-foot-10], so they had to put me on a metal box to make us the same height even though I was in heels and Taylor was barefoot.” She noted that by the time her scene was over she had applied more than 10 layers of lipstick.
She admitted that she had no idea the video was for Taylor until she arrived on set. “Imagine my surprise when I sat in the makeup chair and found out it was for Taylor Swift,” she told Billboard. “Taylor introduced herself to me, and since I saw her dancing earlier, I told her I take hip-hop classes, which is really crazy for a middle-aged Asian mom. What I loved about her is that she’s dancing with full abandon with not a care of what other people think. I’m that way too. Once you’re in your 50s, there’s a lot you don’t care about and you care more about the time you have left here on Earth and what legacy you’re going to leave behind.”
According to Junko, she didn’t realize the tweet from her daughter had gone viral. The family has been shocked at the reaction by Twitter, she told Entertainment Weekly. “[Megumi] was trying to do her homework and her phone was buzzing, buzzing, buzzing with every notice,” Junko said. “As much as a teenager can tell their mom that she’s proud, I think in her own way she’s doing that now. One of my goals in life is #embarrassmyteen.”
Junko has already started planning her next music video move, sharing that she’ll be starring in a music video for Next Stop Mars. She also shared that she hopes to meet Taylor again, and wants to possibly duet with the singer on “22.” The song has a personal connection for the mom, who said: “I’m so old, but inside I’m young. Everybody has an internal age that we’re stuck at and we look in the mirror and go, ‘Whose body is this?’ But inside I’m still 22.”
