Antonio Conte suffered arguably his most humiliating defeat as Chelsea boss on Wednesday night as his side lost 3-0 at home against Bournemouth.
However, there was one Chelsea player in particular who took the brunt of the blame at Stamford Bridge – England international and centre back Gary Cahill.
The Blues went down 3-0 to the Cherries in the Premier League following quickfire second-half goals from Callum Wilson, Junior Stanislas and Nathan Ake.
Gary Cahill was slammed on social media after Chelsea lost 3-0 against Bournemouth
And following the final whistle on Wednesday night, fans flocked to social media to slam Cahill for his poor performance, with many calling for him to lose his captaincy and be dropped.
One fan in particular lambasted the 32-year-old, posting a video of his mistakes against Bournemouth, alongside the caption: ‘Watch him in the clips, runners in behind, reactive defender, backs off & lets attackers dribble.
‘Covered by Christensen, runs in straight lines, makes whole defence nervous, awful on the ball, at fault for all 3 goals.’
However, inevitably more criticism on social media was to follow for Cahill, who joined Chelsea in 2012 from Bolton.
One Chelsea supporter wrote on Twitter: ‘Gary the passport merchant Cahill time is up. The fake captain never could and never will be able lace Terry’s boots.’

Meanwhile, another fan called for him to hang up his boots: ‘Gary Cahill needs to retire from football altogether. He has become an absolute embarrassment.’
Another Chelsea fan claims he was not surprised at his side’s weak performance at the back after Cahill was brought back into the starting XI alongside Antonio Rudiger. He said on Twitter: ‘Gary Cahill came back and guess what happened?’
It wasn’t only fans who were quick to slam Cahill though.
After the Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, Bournemouth striker Wilson admitted that his side targeted Chelsea’s weak links Cahill and Rudiger.
Asked if he sensed weaknesses in the Chelsea team and their performance, Wilson replied: ‘We knew Chelsea had weaknesses with their back line so we targeted one side as the triggers for our press.’

One Chelsea supporter has called for the next manager to strip Cahill of the captain’s armband
And the criticism didn’t stop there, with this fan describing him as the ‘slowest man alive’
According to this fan, Chelsea defender Cahill has ‘become an absolute embarrassment’
The introduction of Rudiger, who was brought on in place of Andreas Christensen, forced Cahill into a central position at the heart of the back three, and the striker believes this unsettled the hosts’ defence.
‘The personnel change not too long into the game, but the game plan for us stayed the same.
‘The left side we were always going to press when the ball went to him. And it worked for us really. We got a lot of regains and won second balls.
‘Everybody to a man put in a good shift tonight. We’re unbeaten in six and want to carry that on.’
