(FOX 46 WJZY) – A Missouri firefighter whose performance of Garth Brooks’ The Dance from his hospital bed went viral has died.
Marc Wright, 47, passed away Monday after a three-year long battle with cancer.
Wright became a viral sensation when a video was posted to Facebook of him singing Garth Brooks’ The Dance to his family and friends from his hospital bed.
“He was an amazing man and as you can see had a beautiful voice,” his sister Michele Wright told FOX 46 in a previous interview.
Wright and his family learned last summer that his cancer had come back for a fourth time, with more tumors in more places, after countless chemotherapy treatments. He retired in Feb. 2017 from his 25-year career at the Columbia Missouri Fire Department. He also worked part-time on the ambulance at Boone Hospital.
Cancer is the leading cause of death for firefighters, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Columbia, Missouri. A GoFundMe campaign called the Marc Wright Funeral Expense Fund has surpassed its $10,000 goal.
