One of the criticisms often thrown at the Grammys is that it’s a popularity contest more than a barometer of good music. And after the 60th Grammy Awards ceremony in New York last night, that’s an accusation being thrown up again.
Last night’s controversy all revolves around the Best Pop Solo Performance category, which saw P!NK, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson and Ed Sheeran all nominated for the prestigious gong.

It was UK pop sensation Sheeran who won, however, sparking a small chorus of boos from the crowd and a lot of hate on – where else – the internet?
Some of the ire was a reaction to the fact that it was the only male to be nominated who actually came away with the award…

movement and in a climate of awareness about sexual harassment, it was the
singer of ‘Shape Of You’, a song that obsesses over the body of a female, that
And the tweets just kept flooding in:
While it’s perhaps not fair that some of the anger was
directed at the singer rather than the music industry itself, Ed Sheeran didn’t
help matters by not actually being at the ceremony, unlike all of his fellow
nominees. Or admitting that he was asleep when it was on.

It’s not all been bad press for the outrageously successful singer-songwriter, however – earlier this month he announced his engagement to girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. After his Grammy no-show, let’s hope Ed doesn’t sleep through the wedding as well.
